HUGO BOSS commits to fur-free policy

GERMANY, 6 JULY 2015 –The Fur Free Alliance praises luxury brand Hugo Boss for phasing out all real animal fur. The progressive decision was recently announced in the HUGO BOSS Sustainability Report 2014 and has been an issue in discussions between HUGO BOSS and the Fur Free Alliance.

HUGO BOSS will be dropping all fur, including rabbit fur, from Fall/Winter 2016 Collection onward.

Joh Vinding, Chairman of the Fur Free Alliance says:

HUGO BOSS has become a leader in the fashion world by taking a stand against animal cruelty and ending the use of fur in collections. The Fur Free Alliance hopes other luxury brands will follow HUGO BOSS’s lead, especially since there are now so many cruelty-free alternatives that are fashionable and indistinguishable from the real thing.”

Bernd Keller, Brand and Creative Director Sportswear at HUGO BOSS, said in the company’s latest Sustainability Report:

From our Fall/Winter 2016 Collection onward, we will no longer be using raccoon dog or rex rabbits. This means we will not be using any farmed fur in any of our HUGO BOSS clothing collections and are sending out a clear signal… Today, we are therefore also successfully supplying “friendly fur” and “friendly leather” products. We want to use these products to inspire the present generation and especially the next generation with a new kind of luxury.”

HUGO BOSS joins a growing list of fur-free brands and retailers, including Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein, Stella McCartney, Zara, and ASOS.

Please let HUGO BOSS know your appreciation for their compassionate decision to go fur free, by leaving a message here.

Fur ban at Charles Vögele

BASEL, 16 FEBUARY 2015 – A traditional Swiss business is now free of fur: the Charles Vögele Group has undertaken to forego the sale of real fur within the framework of the “Fur Free Retailer” programme. This fashion business has therefore now clearly positioned itself in opposition to fur products involving animal abuse. Swiss Animal Protection SAP welcomes this definitive step in the battle against fashion based on real fur.

11054505583_575456a6faIn an era when fur is in fashion, when the fur industry reports record revenues and when more than 100 million fur-bearing animals world-wide are dying every year to serve the fashion industry, the Charles Vögele Group is now pointing the way forward for animal protection. No real fur has been offered for sale at this Swiss fashion company for several years, which was first founded in 1955 and now operates in eight different countries. The Pfäffikon-based fashion group has joined the international “Fur Free Retailer” programme, whose participants promise that they will not offer textiles for sale at a total of about 770 retail outlets in Switzerland and around the world. Swiss Animal Protection SAP is convinced that this decision by the Charles Vögele Group will increase the pressure on those obdurate companies who are still reluctant to give up their sale of fur.

Fur free together
For many years now, Swiss Animal Protection SAP has acted as the representative of the international “Fur Free Retailer” programme in Switzerland to offer the “fur free label” as a dependable guide to consumers who buy animal-friendly products and want to avoid real fur. SAP’s “No animal fur sold here” label singles out those shops and clothing brands whose collections completely forego the processing and sale of real fur. The Charles Vögele Group is in very good company: other leading fashion businesses such as H&M, Esprit, American Apparel, Blue Dog, Schild and Chicoree also belong to the “Fur Free Retailer” programme. *

* The full list of suppliers who operate in Switzerland and are members of the “Fur Free Retailer” programme can be found here.

Fur Free Fashion Beijing: International designers call for fur-free fashion

BEIJING, 19 JANUARY 2015 – International welfare charity ACTAsia, based in the UK, Netherlands, China and the U.S., held its second annual Fur Free Fashion show yesterday in Beijing, China’s capital. Designers from three continents joined the runway, along with nineteen fur-free brands, to promote fashion with compassion for people, animals and the environment.

foto cruelty free fashionAfter a successful launch of the first-ever Fur Free Fashion Show in China in 2014 as part of ACTAsia’s nationwide Fur Free China campaign, this year’s event reached an even wider audience with a growing attendance of national and international cruelty-free fashion designers. Popular brands from the U.S., Poland, UK, Belgium, Korea and China presented their designs in the LEVI Art Studio in downtown Beijing.

The show was attended by over 200 Chinese celebrities and stars from the TV and music industries, including Miss China of 2013, TV actresses and pop singers, and attendees from the government and corporate sectors. Representatives of the British and Polish Embassies in Beijing presented the Fur Free Life Awards to individuals and companies in recognition of their outstanding efforts to promote a fur free lifestyle.

ACTAsia’s Founder and Executive Director Pei Su stated that “China is one of the major fur-producing countries and has now become one of the biggest fur-consuming countries in the world, and the numbers are growing. Millions of animals raised for fur endure tragic lives and horrifying deaths. The industry also has many damaging effects on the environment. The Fur Free Fashion Show encourages the Chinese public, designers and retailers to make compassionate lifestyle choices and join a ‘fur free life.’

The talented group of designers who provided their fur-free collections includes New York designer Leanne Mai-ly Hilgart from VAUTE, Gosia Sobiczewska from Poland, and Chinese designers Tony Yu and Li Lidan. The Chinese brands that were represented include Awakening and Zhong Shan Micro Life.  Katrien Van Hecke, the rising Belgian women’s wear designer, said, “I hope by participating in the show in China, I will motivate the public to choose consciously made products as well as offer a more compassionate example for fashion students in China.”

CrueltyFree Fashion China 2015+Tune Tune, one of the first Chinese brands that joined the group of Fur Free Retailers (an initiative of the global coalition Fur Free Alliance) has over sixty stores throughout China. Design Director Zhao Chao, explains, “We believe fashion is designed for beauty, and should not take away beauty from innocent animals. Our company does not use fur and we also actively promote a fur-free life as part of our corporate social responsibilities.”

The majority of the collections on the catwalk were produced with eco-friendly and organic materials, including the use of banana fiber, tree bark and recycled bottles. LUSH Asia continued to be the exclusive cruelty-free cosmetics sponsor for the show, and healthy plant-based Chinese traditional food was served to demonstrate another aspect of compassionate living.

Fur Free Alliance, the global alliance promoting fur-free life sent their congratulatory message to the show. Chairman Joh Vinding said “I wish to congratulate everyone participating in the 2015 Fur Free Life — Cruelty Free Fashion Show. I hope this trend will lead more people to be aware that fur fashions cost animals their lives. We encourage companies to help by becoming fur-free retailers. “

Belgian designer Noemie Flamant drops fur from her collection

BRUSSELS, 12 DECEMBER 2014 – Belgian designer Noemie Flamant, whose collections were made of fur only, has committed not to include it in her future collections. She made that decision after consultation with GAIA, following a TV report, which generated numerous reactions. GAIA is very pleased and calls this an important signal to designers who still work with real fur. In the future, she will switch to high-quality faux fur.

Belgium designer
“This is an important step for the welfare of furbearing animals,” said GAIA director Ann De Greef when congratulating Noemie Flamant. The past few days GAIA asked its supporters to engage in an email campaign after the airing of a report on the regional TV channel WTV about Noemie Flamant’s fur collection.
The animal rights organisation GAIA is very pleased that Noemie Flamant goes fur free aftre being informed about the conditions for animals at fur farms. GAIA director Ann De Greef: “This is fantastic news. By doing this the designer gives an important signal to designers who still work with real fur.” Noemie Flamant: “Stopping using real fur is, as a designer, a real turn in my career. In the future I will seek high quality materials like faux fur, to be able to continue my collection.”
This animal-friendly decision is not only in line with GAIA’s wishes. Nine out of ten Belgians are against the breeding and killing of animals for their fur. That is the conclusion of different opinion polls commissioned by GAIA and carried out by IPSOS.

Bestselling fashion giant signs fur free agreement

20 NOVEMBER 2014, KOPENHAGEN – Bestseller, one of Europe’s biggest fashion retailers, has agreed to go fur free with the Fur Free Alliance, marking a great victory for animals and animal welfare campaigners worldwide.

The Danish retailer owns 20 brands, including Vero Moda, Only, Vila and Jack & Jones, and the products are sold in more than 15,000 stores in more than 70 markets.

Joh Vinding, chairman of the Fur Free Alliance states: “The Fur Free Alliance is extremely excited to see a such a big player entering our Fur Free Retailer program. The more consumers learn about the atrocities animals go through on fur farms or when caught in traps, the more interested companies become in going fur free. I’m convinced many more fashion giants will join our program in the years to come – it’s simply good business to do so.”

Katrine Milman, head of corporate sustainability for Bestseller said: “For more than a decade Bestseller has been a fur free company. We are happy and proud to be fur free and our customers appreciate it. For that reason it is natural for us to become part of the Fur Free Retailer program and thereby give our customers an easy way of recognizing that Bestseller doesn’t sell real fur.”

Bestseller is the newest of more than 300 companies that are already signed up on the Fur Free Retailer program. Others include Inditex (owns the Zara brand), H&M, C&A, Zalando and ASOS.
